1959 - The Roller Derby Skate Corporation launches the world’s first mass-produced skateboard; this board has steel wheels with no bearings.
1963 - Larry Stevenson of Makaha Skateboards organizes one of the earliest skateboard exhibitions of all time at the Pier Avenue Junior High School, in Hermosa Beach, California.
1965 - Life Magazine features Patti McGee, the first-ever female national skateboarding champion, on the cover of the publication.
1972 - Polyurethane Wheels revived skateboarding by offering a smoother ride that allowed the boundaries to be tested.
1978 - Alan Gelfand invents the ollie, an important maneuver in modern skateboarding. The trick revolutionized the sport and gave birth to street skateboarding.
1981 - Thrasher Magazine is founded with the motto, “Skate And Destroy”… 2 years later Transworld Skateboarding Magazine is founded with motto “Skate and Create”
1980s - Rodney Mullens influence in freestyle skateboarding begins with invention of flat ground ollie, kick flip, 360 flip, impossible, backside flip, half-cab flip, and switch 3-flip.
1995 - The X Games run for the first time during the summer in Providence and Rhode Island.
1999 - In June, Tony Hawk lands the world’s first 900 during the X Games in San Francisco. In September, “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater,” video game is released for PlayStation.
2004 - Danny Way lands the world’s longest skateboard ramp jump with a 79-foot jump on a mega ramp during the X Games, in LA
2007 - The Berrics is created; key to the transition of how people got ahold of skate content with the addition of short form video.
2010 - Rob Dyrdek develops the Street League Skateboarding to boost and grow the sport’s popularity worldwide. The first season in Arizona, California, and Nevada.
2016 - Olympics Committee announces that skateboarding will make its debut in Tokyo. The event will feature both street and park competitions at the Ariake Urban Sports Park.
